The Dr. Willie C. Fleming Endowed Scholarship
The Dr. Willie C. Fleming Endowed Scholarship at Appalachian State University was established in October 2011 by a group of African-American alumni under the leadership of Judge Gary Henderson "92", "94".
The endowment was established to honor the service and legacy of Dr. Willie C. Fleming, "80", "84". The fundraising goal for the Fleming Endowment is $500,000. A recent gift of $250,000 from the Wells Fargo Foundation has increased the fund total to $333,000 in gifts and pledges.
Fleming served as Appalachian's first minority student advisor and director of Minority Student Affairs, now known as the Office of Multicultural Student Development. He founded the Appalachian Gospel Choir and the Black Student Association, and was a member of the Black Faculty and Staff Association. Fleming also was instrumental in bringing Black Greek Life to Appalachian and was a charter member of the Pi Nu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. Fleming served the students of Appalachian State University as a member of the faculty and staff for 17 years.
The Fleming Endowment will exist in perpetuity to provide scholarship support to underrepresented students at Appalachian State University. The interest generated from the principal in thefund will be utilized to award annual scholarships. To qualify for this scholarship all applicants must be freshmen or transfer students from a community college in North Carolina. The scholarship is only open to residents of North Carolina and the preferred minimum grade point average is a 3.0.
